Lebanese acting Interior Minister Ahmad Fatfat said on February 14 that the al-Qaeda terrorist network is attempting to expand its operations in his country, hinting that the group was cooperating with the pro-Syrian Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), whose offices are in Damascus and who launched rockets at Israeli targets in December.

Syria’s stalled Association Agreement with the EU, a trade liberalisation deal that would open European markets to Syrian exports initialed in October 2004 but quickly put on ice following the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, took a tentative step forward again on February 28 with a European Parliament delegation holding separate meetings with Syrian Deputy Premier for Economic Affairs Abdallah Dardari and Foreign Minister Waleed al-Mualem.
