Aleppo’s City Council is moving ahead with its campaign to demolish damaged and collapsing buildings, which number more than 3,000, according to an estimate by the Council’s Public Safety Committee. Most of the threatened buildings are in the eastern neighbourhoods of Aleppo, which was under rebel control from 2012 to 2016, and suffered heavy damage during clashes and airstrikes.

President of the Damascus Provincial Council, Khaled Al-Harah, has visited the neighbourhoods of Barzeh, Qaboun and Jobar in recent days, announcing that residents may return after the structural integrity of local buildings is ensured. Al-Harah added that he had assigned engineers to prepare a rapid and exclusive study of the buildings that are acceptable for rehabilitation so that they can be handed back over to the governorate as quickly as possible.

There is currently a halt in accepting requests to restore damaged buildings in East Ghouta's Arbeen. This suspension does not appear to be tied merely to administrative matters, as official statements would suggest. Aleppo's City Council earlier this month issued Decree No. 55 for granting licences to restore damaged and endangered buildings, as well as the decree's executive instructions.
